The Myth vs. The Machine: Is EPIC: The Musical AI-Generated?

With the rapid explosion of artificial intelligence in creative spaces, it is natural for audiences to look at viral, internet-born phenomena with a healthy dose of skepticism. When EPIC: The Musical—a sweeping, cinematic concept album adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey—began taking over TikTok and streaming platforms, some listeners naturally wondered: Did an AI write this?

The short answer is no. EPIC: The Musical is entirely human-made, born from the multi-year creative obsession of a single young artist. However, the rumors persist for a few distinct reasons. Let’s break down the truth behind the music, the art, and the viral phenomenon.

1. The Human Behind the Masterpiece: Jorge Rivera-Herrans

EPIC wasn’t churned out by a prompt in a chatbot; it was written, composed, and produced by Jorge Rivera-Herrans, a musician, songwriter, and University of Notre Dame graduate.

Rivera-Herrans began conceptualizing the musical in 2019 as a college project, drawing inspiration not from computer algorithms, but from anime and video games to give the ancient Greek epic an “addictive sense of progression”. He spent roughly five years meticulously writing, recording, and casting the project, utilizing social media to document his process and even holding open auditions on TikTok for various vocal roles.
