From Studio to Feed: How to Upload and Share Your Own Music on Instagram
Whether you are an independent artist dropping a new single, a producer showing off a fresh beat, or a creator wanting your audience to use your custom sound in their Reels, getting your music onto Instagram is a game-changer.
However, the way you “upload” your music depends entirely on what you want to achieve. Are you trying to get your song into Instagram’s official searchable audio library so anyone can use it? Or do you just want to attach a custom track or voiceover to your video right now?
Method 1: The Professional Route (Get Your Track in Instagram’s Official Music Library)
If you want your professionally produced song to live in the official Meta Audio Library—allowing you and thousands of other creators to search for it, add it to Reels, and attach it to Stories—you cannot upload it directly inside the Instagram app.
Instead, Meta requires music to come through authorized digital music distributors.
Step-by-Master-Step Guide:
- Prepare Your Assets:
- Audio File: A high-quality uncompressed file, ideally a WAV or FLAC (16-bit or 24-bit, 44.1 kHz).
- Cover Art: A clean, high-resolution square image (typically 3000 x 3000 pixels) free of website URLs, promotional text, or copyrighted logos.
- Metadata: Your artist name, track title, genre, release date, and songwriter credits.
- Choose a Music Distributor: Sign up with an independent digital music distributor that delivers to Meta/Instagram (such as DistroKid, TuneCore, LANDR, CD Baby, or Unchained Music).
- Create Your Release: Upload your audio and artwork through your distributor’s dashboard, fill out the metadata, and make sure Instagram and Facebook are checked as target platforms during store selection.
- Wait for Processing: Distributors typically review and push releases to Meta within 24 hours, but Instagram’s internal catalog indexing can take anywhere from 3 to 21 days.
- Find and Use It: Once live, open Instagram, create a Reel or Story, tap the Music (🎵) icon, search for your track by title or artist name, and start creating!
Method 2: The Direct Route (Upload via Instagram Reels “Original Audio”)
If you have a quick demo, a custom beat, or a voice recording that isn’t on streaming platforms yet, you can publish it instantly as Original Audio through a Reel.
Note: Instagram labels any native or uploaded video audio without a pre-selected library track as “Original Audio”. Other users can actually discover this sound and use it for their own Reels, linking right back to your profile!
How to do it:
- Open Instagram and tap the
+icon at the top, then select Reel. - Record your video clip directly in the app, or tap the gallery icon in the bottom-left corner to upload a pre-edited video or a static image with your music track already baked into the video file.
- Tap the Music (🎵) icon in the editor sidebar and double-check that no external Instagram library track has been layered over it.
- Proceed to the share screen, tap your audio’s default title, and rename it to your song or project’s actual title.
- Ensure your account and the Reel’s audio visibility are set to Public so that your followers and the public can view and use your sound.
Pro-Tips for Maximizing Your Music on Instagram
- Claim Your Meta Artist Channels: Once your distributor delivers your track, use tools like Meta Business Suite or Spotify/Apple for Artists integrations to ensure your Instagram profile is properly linked to your official artist node.
- Pin Your Sound: When you launch a track using Original Audio or your official library audio, pin the best Reels featuring that audio to the top of your profile grid to give new visitors an immediate taste of your sound.
- Encourage User-Generated Content (UGC): Make it easy for fans. If your track is in the official library, run a prompt or a challenge encouraging followers to use your audio in their weekend Reels, expanding your organic reach exponentially.
