Surviving the Ultimate Clash: The Importance of Second Chance in Kingdom Hearts III

For Kingdom Hearts veterans, few sounds are as panic-inducing as the crunch of Sora’s health bar disappearing in a single, catastrophic blow. Whether you are playing on Standard, Proud, or white-knuckling your way through Critical Mode, boss fights in the series can turn from a graceful dance of Keyblades into a swift execution.

Enter Second Chance—one of the most iconic, game-saving support abilities in the entire franchise. In Kingdom Hearts III, mastering this ability is often the dividing line between victory and a frustrating “Game Over” screen.

What Exactly Is Second Chance?

In Kingdom Hearts III, Second Chance is a passive support ability that costs 4 AP to equip. Its in-game description is simple, but its utility is massive:

If you take a hit that causes more damage than your remaining HP, you will be left with 1 HP instead of getting knocked out (provided you started the hit with more than 1 HP).

Without Second Chance, a powerful boss attack dealing 200 damage will instantly obliterate Sora if he only has 150 HP left. With Second Chance equipped, Sora will miraculously cling to life with a single solitary hit point, buying you a crucial window to heal, cast a defensive spell, or dodge away.

The Dynamic Duo: Second Chance + Withstand Combo

While Second Chance saves you from a fatal single-hit or the first strike of a devastating assault, it doesn’t make you completely invincible on its own. If an enemy continues their onslaught with a multi-hit combo, that very next strike will finish you off.

That is why Second Chance is only half of an elite survival pairing. To truly break the game’s difficulty, you must pair it with Withstand Combo (known as Once More in previous titles):

  • Second Chance: Protects you from a massive single hit, dropping you to 1 HP.
  • Withstand Combo: Protects you from being killed mid-combo, keeping you at 1 HP for the duration of a multi-hit flurry.

When equipped together, these two abilities create a safety net that lets Sora weather even the most aggressive combos from late-game bosses or Re Mind super-bosses, provided you can slip away to use an item or a Cure spell afterward.

How to Get It in Kingdom Hearts III

Unlike earlier entries where Sora learned Second Chance naturally through leveling up depending on initial choices, unlocking it in Kingdom Hearts III depends on your character progression and Formchoices, or through specific accessories:

  • Level Progression & Formchanges: Certain Formchanges (like Guardian Form and Ultimate Form) feature Second Chance natively as a form ability. Sora also learns it naturally as he levels up, depending on the stat tracks of his chosen progression.
  • Star Medal Accessories: If you want early access—especially helpful for Level 1 Critical playthroughs—you can hunt for Star Medals. These rare accessories have a chance to roll with built-in abilities like Second Chance or Withstand Combo. You can earn them by achieving high scores in minigames like the Flash Tracer course in Thebes.

Final Thoughts

Kingdom Hearts III rewards aggressive play, flashy attractions, and clever Keyblade transformations, but it also punishes carelessness. Equipping Second Chance doesn’t mean you can ignore enemy attack patterns, but it does provide a safety margin for error. For anyone diving into the darkest corridors of the game’s toughest challenges, leaving Second Chance unequipped is a luxury you simply cannot afford.
