If you have spent any time scrolling through TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts recently, you have almost certainly heard it: a relentless, high-energy, dark electronic beat that feels simultaneously hypnotic and aggressively fast. This sound is part of a massive global music phenomenon known as montagem.

Derived from Portuguese—where “montagem” translates directly to “montage,” “assembly,” or “editing”—this genre and production style has exploded far beyond its origins in Brazil to become a dominant force in modern internet culture.

What Exactly Is a Montagem?

At its core, a montagem is a collage of sound. The term has two main contexts:

  1. In Brazilian Funk (Funk Carioca / Funk Paulista): Historically, a montagem refers to a track constructed by cutting, stitching, and layering samples from older funk tracks, vocal snippets, movie quotes, sirens, and heavy percussion loops. Producers take pieces of musical history and mash them together into a brand-new, cohesive, and explosive rhythm.
  2. The Modern Global Micro-Genre: Over the last few years, underground producers—particularly in Brazil (artists like DJ FKU, Suku, and many others) and later adopted globally—pushed this style into darker, heavier territory. Modern viral tracks like Montagem – Mysterious Game or Montagem – Orquestra feature distorted basslines, aggressive electronic rhythms, and spooky synthesizer melodies.

Key Musical Characteristics

What makes a montagem instantly recognizable? Several defining elements set it apart from other electronic genres:

  • The Phonk and Funk Fusion: Modern montagems often blend the heavy, cowbell-driven aesthetics of Memphis-style phonk with the syncopated, driving percussion of Brazilian funk.
  • Aggressive Sound Design: Producers love heavy distortion, clipping 808 sub-basses, metallic percussion, and unsettling vocal chops (often pitched down or echoing).
  • Rapid-Fire Editing: True to its name, the song structure changes quickly. It cuts between buildup drops, eerie atmospheric breaks, and high-tempo rhythm sections without warning.

Why Did It Go Viral?

Montagems became the ultimate soundtrack for internet content because of their sheer kinetic energy.

Content creators found that the heavy drops and intense pacing of these tracks serve as the perfect backdrop for dramatic edits, gaming montages, anime compilations, and workout videos. The music creates an immediate sense of hype, urgency, and style that grabs a viewer’s attention within the first second of a video.
