Unlocking Your Own AI Assistant: How to Access the Custom GPT Workspace in ChatGPT
Have you ever wished you could clone your expertise, bake your favorite writing style, or build a dedicated research assistant that only talks about 18th-century maritime history? ChatGPT makes this possible through its custom workspace environment, where you can tailor a specialized version of the AI with its own instructions, data, and capabilities.
Accessing this builder space is straightforward once you know where to look. Here is your complete guide to finding, opening, and navigating the workshop where custom AI assistants come to life.
Step 1: Head to the Web Interface
The custom assistant builder is optimized for desktop and laptop environments.
- Open your browser and log into your ChatGPT account.
- Note: While you can easily use, chat with, and interact with custom assistants on mobile apps, the creation and editing workspace is accessed primarily via the web interface.
Step 2: Open “Explore GPTs”
Look at the left-hand navigation sidebar in your ChatGPT window.
- Click on Explore GPTs (or navigate directly to
[chatgpt.com/gpts](https://chatgpt.com/gpts)). - This will take you to the discovery hub where you can see featured creations, search public tools, and manage your own workspace.
Step 3: Click “Create”
At the top of the Explore page or within your personal management section, look for the Create button (often accompanied by a plus sign or a distinct editing card).
- Clicking this immediately launches you into the GPT Builder workspace.
Troubleshooting Tip: If you cannot find the Create button or find that it is grayed out, check your account type. Custom assistant creation features are typically tied to eligible workspace tiers (such as Team, Enterprise, or Education accounts with proper permissions enabled by your administrator).
Inside the Workshop: The Two Ways to Build
Once you enter the space, you are presented with a split-screen workspace: a configuration/chat pane on the left and a real-time Preview pane on the right. You can build your assistant using two different tabs:
- The “Create” Tab (Conversational Builder):
- Perfect if you prefer talking things out. You simply chat with a meta-assistant in plain English. Tell it things like, “I want to build a tutor that helps high schoolers understand calculus using soccer analogies,” and it will automatically draft the name, description, and baseline instructions for you.
- The “Configure” Tab (Manual Control):
- Ideal for fine-tuning. Here, you have granular control over every single parameter of your AI:
- Name & Description: How your assistant introduces itself and appears in lists.
- Instructions: The core “system prompt” defining its personality, boundaries, and step-by-step logic.
- Knowledge: An upload zone where you can drop up to 20 reference files (PDFs, text documents, spreadsheets) for your assistant to draw from.
- Capabilities: Toggle switches allowing your assistant to use Web Search, Image Generation, Code Interpreter, or external API Actions.

Test and Launch
As you make adjustments—whether by chatting in the builder or tweaking fields in the configuration menu—your changes save to a draft automatically. Use the Preview pane on the right side of your screen to test out prompts, check its tone, and verify that it reads your uploaded files correctly.
When you are satisfied with your creation, click Create or Update in the top corner. You can then choose whether to keep the assistant private for your own use, share it via a direct link with colleagues, or publish it to the broader community.
